Initial Answer
Using what you know about energy, write up a thoughtful individual initial answer to the question: "What causes waves in the ocean?"
NOW, read your initial answer to your team members and together come up with an initial Team Answer to the same question.

Mind Map
Individually come up with a mind map with a center question of "What causes waves in the ocean?" Individually you should have at least six (6) questions that you will add to your map. Once you've come up with your map, start researching the answers to your questions. In addition, find out the answers to the following questions: "Who is Laird Hamilton?" "What is Teahupoo?" these questions and answers will help us get going with our phenomenon...

Draw the diagram from page 64 in your science journal as well as the diagram from page 69.
Check this out!
While taking notes look for:
- Shape of the wave - draw one in your science journal
- How Hamilton gets out to the wave
- How the jet boat piloted by Darrick Doerner tows Hamilton parallel to the face of the wave but remains steady as Hamilton enters the wave
- How Hamilton drops his left hand down to the water for stability
- How do you know Teahupoo has a lot of energy?
- Are waves moving water???? or moving energy????
Water Wave Lab
SAFETY:
When tapping the water with the ruler - tap gently - DO NOT BANG THE RULER IN THE WATER!
MATERIALS:
Tub with water in it
Ruler
Science Journal
Pencil
INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Gently tap the end of the ruler on the water at one end of the tub
2. Write down your observations and draw a picture of what you observed happening to the water in the tub.
3. Gently tap the end of the ruler on the water in the center of the tub
4. Write down your observations and draw a picture of what you observed happening to the water in the tub.
5. Gently tap the end of the ruler on the water at the other end of the tub
6. Write down your observations and draw a picture of what you observed happening to the water in the tub.
QUESTIONS to ANSWER:
1. Do waves travel? Explain using evidence and science terms.
2. What did you notice between the waves you created in steps 1, 3, and 5. What were some similarities and what were some differences?
3. What is something you learned from doing this lab. How did what you learn help you answer the phenomenon question: "How do ocean waves start and do they travel?"

Wave Simulations
Watch the simulations of the different types of waves.
Take notes and define the four different types of waves.
Draw a picture of each wave type to help you remember how these waves work
What did you learn about waves? Write a paragraph explaining what you have learned about waves.
